  Dear First Grade Families, We had a busy, 5-day week! Everyone (including myself!) was running low on energy by Friday. First grade is busy, busy and there's always work to be done. On Fridays, we do some special things, like add a poem to our poetry binder, have choice time, and do some free writing during "Power Block." We often do a math craft or play a math game on Fridays, too! This week in Fundations.. -We finished up Unit 2, which focused on tapping (segmenting) and blending (reading) CVC words. We also reviewed some "trick words" (high frequency" words from kindergarten. When I introduce trick words, we say the word, count the sounds and then "map" the sounds. Some parts of high frequency words are "decodable" and other parts have a "trick" part that we need to remember by heart. This week, we reviewed: his, is, has, and as. We learned that the trick part of these words is that the /z/ sound is spelled with an s. Once...

Fire Safety Visit

Last Friday we had a visit from the Kittery Fire Department. We learned about fire safety tips, saw firefighters in their gear, and got a chance to climb into a fire truck!   

Week of October 2nd

Dear First Grade Families, I updated the blog, but forgot to let you know, so there are two posts! Today was our 25th day of school! The students have done a wonderful job learning our classroom routines, building community, and making friends. I am amazed by their stamina and ability to to work, work, work! Students are working on building their independence during center time so that I can pull small groups. Right now, students are learning their jobs and what to do when they're "finished" so that they do not have to interrupt the teacher or other friends who are working. Literacy -We wrapped up Unit 1 of Fundations. This unit focused on the letter name, keyword, and letter sound. We also did a lot of practice with letter formation. We are working really hard on making our letters the correct size and shape, as well as orientation! Lowercase b's and d's are always challenging for first graders.
