Week of 9/18

Dear First Grade Families,

We wrapped up another busy week in first grade. We have continued practicing our classroom routines and settling into our regular daily schedule. We have also had several school-wide safety drills and taken some beginning-of-the-year assessments. The students are doing a great job with all of it!

Here are some things we’ve been working on in our classroom:

Classroom Community - We have a daily morning meeting. Morning meeting has four components: greeting, sharing, activity, and morning message/calendar. It is a great way to start the day and get to know each other. We also developed our classroom promise (rules) so that everyone can learn.

Literacy - We are working our way through Unit 1 of Fundations. This unit is a review of letters/sounds that students learned in kindergarten. We are also focusing on letter formation. We also do daily phonemic awareness lessons. The students will tell you this is my favorite part of the day! We have been doing a lot of writing connected to read-alouds. Next week, we will learn about the parts of a sentence and work on writing complete sentences.

Math - We have been practicing skip counting, using a number line, and establishing our daily routines in math. We have also been practicing working in small groups for math centers.

Science/Social Studies - We have been working on building our classroom community. Next week, we will begin learning about Hispanic Heritage Month.
